Alterations in the fecal microbiome and metabolome of horses with antibiotic diarrhea

Antibiotics appear to deplete commensal bacteria in the horse's hind gut and alter specific metabolic pathways.

Antimicrobial-associated diarrhea (ADD) is a common adverse effect of antibiotic use in horses. Although all antimicrobials have the potential to cause ADD, some antibiotic agents present a higher risk due to biliary excretion, enterohepatic recycling, or drug concentration in the intestinal lumen secondary to low oral absorption. To date, tetracyclines, macrolides, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, trimethoprim-sulfamide, chloramphenicol, beta-lactams, and metronidazole have been reported to cause AAD in horses.
